Wedding planning can be stressful!
You may feel overwhelmed amid the chaos of coordinating venues, attire, and entertainment. Choosing a wedding cake designer may seem especially daunting. What if the cake looks amateurish or tastes terrible?
You need more than just a baker - a true creative partner. Someone who will listen attentively, bring your vision to life, and simplify this process. If all of the above rings true, here are my top tips for finding a cake designer to create a visual masterpiece that fits perfectly with your day AND tastes amazing!

Step One - Do Your Research There were a lot of cake makers pre-covid, but now that everyone and their nan has started selling cakes, finding the right one for you may feel even harder. Especially, when not all of them are registered with environmental health, have insurance or even have experience making wedding cake. So when do you need to start looking? As with all things wedding, earlier is ALWAYS better. I recommend beginning your search around 18 months before your big day, two years for summer weddings. Where do you look? Google, your venue-recommended supplier list, recommendations from your other suppliers, socials and wedding fayres are all great places to look. Now, do they meet the following criteria? 1. Do they create cakes in the style you imagined for your wedding? 2. Do they cover your area or are willing to travel? 3. Does your budget align with their price point? 4. Do they have examples of their previous work (images and reviews)? 5. Do they have a website?* * A professional cake designer will always have a website. If they are paying for a website, domain and email address, they are probably also registered and have insurance. If the answer is yes, you can add them to your shortlist!

Step Two - Contact them The best way to contact a wedding cake designer will be through their website contact form. Here they will likely ask you a few questions about your big day (date, location, number of guests, budget and design ideas), this will help them reply with all the necessary information and check their availability. If they are available for your date and you are happy with all the information they have provided, schedule a call to discuss your dream wedding cake and get to know their process. Liking your wedding cake designer is essential! You will be working with them very closely for a long time and you need to trust that they will bring your vision to reality.

Step Three - Try Before You Buy This step isn't always necessary and will depend on how you found the cake designer. If you met them at a wedding fayre or they were recommended by a friend/ family member, you may have already tried their cake and know how amazing it is. Alternatively, they may have so many reviews about their cakes that you don't think a sample box is required. If not, most cake designers will offer a sample box to purchase before you book with them. They will be posted or you may need to collect them locally. This is something you can ask about in your call with them. Whichever route you take, a sample box will probably be included in your design process to choose which flavours you want to feature in your final cake.

The amount of this despot required will vary between designers and how they work. Amounts can vary from £100 to 50% of the final invoice amount. Make sure to ask in your call so you know what to expect. Regardless of the value, this is usually deducted from the final invoice payment. So don't worry if one designer's deposit is higher than another, the more you pay upfront, the less you will pay closer to your wedding.
Step Five - The Fun Part Your cake designer is booked, now it's time to save inspirational pictures. Pinterest is a great place to start. Create a board and save images of cakes you like and aspects of the wedding as you boo them. The more inspiration you can provide the better. This will help your cake designer get a real sense of you and your wedding style. This stage will begin around 12 to 6 months before your wedding, depending on your designer's process.
